MMS's are multimedia messages which include voice, picture or video messages sent by your phone. These are usually not included in phone contract bundles with the exception of the Orange panther contracts. Typically they cost between 20-40p each. While it might not seem like a lot, a few a week adds up. Here are some "free" alternatives (they will need an internet add-on ~£5 a month however you also get the extra benefit of being able to roam the internet for free on your phone.)
Blackberrys have an exclusive system called Blackberry messenger. As well as being able to send free messages to others who use the same system you can send them files on your Blackberry, which include photos. Blackberrys are amongst the cheapest smartphones on the market and easy to use.
Nearly every phone on the market has the capability to send emails. This isn't restricted to just BlackBerrys, a common misconception.
While Blackberry has their own messenger service, messages cannot be sent to non-blackberry owning friends. An alternative is the cross-platform whatsapp, an app available for iPhones, Android and Blackberry. The downside is your friends also need this app!
Non geographic calls e.g. 0800 or 0870 numbers to call your bank turned out to be the biggest extra expense to those surveyed by mobilephonerd. In fact freephone 0800 numbers are actually charged by nearly all mobile networks! We compare call charges to 0800 numbers below. There are numerous ways to beat these charges (see below)

On the internet: saynoto0870.co.uk. A great website which gives geographical alternatives when a name or number is input. 0800divert and 0800wizard, are websites that give you a random geographical number (that come out of your minutes) which after dialling you then put in your 0800 number.
Saynoto0870 have their own app for the iPhone and Android phones. 0800 wizard also has its own app for iPhone , Android and BlackBerry users.
